Experience a braai at Hammer & Tongs.
Braai is a South African barbecue. Not to be mistaken with any other barbecue you’ve ever had. A braai is special for so many reasons. Back in South Africa almost all the braai’s are fired with wood (don’t even utter the word gas) this gives the food a smokey, aromatic flavour. Braaing is the most primal way of cooking and in our opinion, and most South Africans, the tastiest. You’ll find a lot of meat on a braai, but also fresh fish and occasionally someone will question why there are vegetables taking up valuable space on the braai.
A braai is also an every day, any day celebration. It’s acceptable to have a braai for any occasion back home. ‘You just got a promotion? Congrats, let’s braai’. ‘You’re engaged? I’ll bring bubbles to the braai’. ‘It’s Tuesday. Shall we braai at yours or the beach tonight?’ It’s the perfect excuse to get together with friends and family, get a nice cold dop (drink) in your hand and relax as you anticipate the delicious food about to come your way.
Braaing is close to everyone’s hearts in South Africa. It’s more than just a way of cooking, and eating, it’s a way of life.
There are 11 official languages in South Africa and braai is said the same way in all languages.
